Why We’re Adding Sound and Breathwork to a Sweat-First Studio

If you'd told us two years ago that The ROWDY Mermaid would be hosting a sound bath, we probably would have laughed. This is a studio built on heat, heavy breathing, and playlists that make you want to hit something. Quiet was never really our language.

And yet, here we are, launching the OLAS Collective, a new series built around sound, breath, and stillness. No bike. No step platform. No countdown timer. Just a room, some sound, and permission to actually stop for once.

We know how that might read at first. Like a pivot. Like we got tired of the sweat and decided to try something softer instead. That's not what happened. If anything, this is us paying attention to something we've believed the whole time and just hadn't built a room for yet.

Sweat was never actually the whole point

We've said it since day one. More sweat equals stronger mental health. But if you really sit with that sentence, the sweat was always the delivery system, not the destination. What we were actually chasing the entire time was the thing that happens after the sweat. The quiet in your head. The version of you that walks out lighter than she walked in.

Turns out there's more than one road to that same place.

Breathwork gets you there through your nervous system directly instead of through your muscles. Sound does something similar, it gives your brain one single thing to focus on instead of the six hundred tabs you usually have open, and somewhere in that focus, the noise actually quiets down. Different mechanism. Same destination we've been chasing in the heated room this whole time.

We didn't decide this alone

Here's the honest version. We started noticing something in Monmouth County that we couldn't ignore. Breathwork events. Sound healing gatherings. Women's circles built specifically around slowing down together instead of grinding together. This wasn't a trend we read about somewhere far away. This was happening around us, close enough that we kept hearing about it from our own members.

Some of you were already going to these things on your own, separately from us, on days you weren't in our studio. And that told us something important. The women who show up for Burn and Power on Monday are the same women looking for stillness on a Thursday night. We weren't offering you the whole picture. We were only giving you one half of what you actually needed.

So we stopped pretending sweat was the only tool in the box and built a room for the other half.

Why sound, and why now

Our first OLAS Collective event happened this month at Sound Alchemy, led by Eleonora Zampatti. If you've never experienced a sound session, here's the honest description, not the mystical one. You lay down. You close your eyes. Someone plays instruments specifically designed to move sound through a room in a way your body actually responds to, and for about an hour, you have nothing to do except exist inside that sound.

It sounds almost too simple to matter. It isn't. Most of us are so used to being in motion, physically, mentally, emotionally, that an hour of enforced stillness feels like its own kind of workout. Your brain doesn't know what to do with the quiet at first. Then it does. And that's usually when something shifts.

This isn't instead of the sweat. It's alongside it.

Let's be clear about something. We're not becoming a meditation studio. Burn is still Burn. The heat is still cranked. Power is still going to ask more of you than you think you have some days. That part of who we are isn't changing.

What's changing is that we're finally admitting the whole picture was never just about how hard you can push. It's also about whether you know how to come back down afterward. Athletes talk about this constantly, the recovery matters as much as the training. We've built recovery into this studio for years through the infrared sauna. OLAS is us extending that same idea into your nervous system, not just your muscles.

Come find out what stillness actually feels like in a room built for noise

If you've never taken a breathwork or sound class before, we get it if this feels like unfamiliar territory. It felt that way to us too, honestly, before we actually experienced it ourselves. But the same thing that's true about walking into your first Burn class is true here. You don't have to know what you're doing. You just have to show up and let the room do what it's built to do.

This is the start of something new for us, and we're genuinely excited to see where it goes. Not instead of the sweat. Alongside it. Because it turns out the loudest room in Belmar has some quiet in it too, and honestly, we think that makes us more of who we've always been, not less.
